Bathroom Makeover
Owning your own home really is incredible, especially when it comes to the freedom to do whatever you want to it. After renting for what felt like forever, we bought our house in 2011 and started dreaming up big plans. The biggest downside of owning your own home is obviously the amount of money it takes to have the home you really want. There is a major learning curve for becoming a homeowner, but one that is fun to tackle and leaves you with such an immense feeling of pride with all the accomplishments. Gutting this bathroom was really fun and a huge teaching opportunity for both of us. In order to save money, we opted to leave the plumbing where it is, as well as the tub and toilet. Basically, it just got an aesthetic makeover, and boy was it worth it. People had a hard time understanding why I wanted to rip out that vanity and replace it with a pedestal sink and shelf. The truth is, that vanity seriously lacked in storage and the builders grade mirror had zero appeal to me. Pedestal sinks are cheap and fit with the design direction I was heading. The leaning ladder shelf we used was also quite cheap and together, the cost was a fraction of the price we would have paid for a nice vanity. Plus, our son is the primary user of this bathroom and he doesn’t care about storage!
While the job took way longer than we ever anticipated, it really turned out great. I must confess, I shower in this bathroom exclusively, and will until we’re able to update our master bathroom - anyone looking to collaborate?! Ive got big ideas! We chose a simple white subway tile for the shower with a dark gray grout, and is so much better and was very affordable. The biggest splurge of the room was the encaustic cement tile from Cement Tile Shop. I dreamt about this tile for the longest time and love it so very much. Well worth every last penny.
